The Pompadour ring was named after the first woman to wear the style in French court in 1757. The Pompadour style became popular so quickly that women all of Europe started to copy the style for engagement rings. The first Pompadour ring was an oval blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds… which still famously appears in royal engagement rings today (Princess Diana’s sapphire ring)

This particular cushion cut sapphire sits surrounded by rose cut diamond, to catch the light and the eye of envious onlookers.
